JUN - 2026
Your June Garden Checklist: What to Do This Month
June is one of the busiest months in the garden. Here's everything you should be doing right now to keep your outdoor space looking its best through summer.
June is when a garden really comes into its own — borders are full, lawns are lush, and there's plenty to keep on top of. The key is not to let things get ahead of you. Here's what our team focuses on throughout the month.
Lawn Care
Your lawn will be growing fast right now. Mow at least once a week, keeping the blade at around 3–4cm. Any shorter and you risk scalping the grass and stressing it during dry spells.
If we get a dry spell, resist the urge to water daily. A deep, infrequent soak once or twice a week encourages roots to grow downward, making the lawn more drought-resistant in the long run.
June is also a good time to apply a summer lawn feed if you haven't already. Look for a fertiliser with a higher nitrogen content to support that leafy green growth.
Borders and Beds
Deadhead roses and perennials regularly to keep them flowering. It takes two minutes per plant and makes an enormous difference to how long they bloom.
Keep on top of weeding — weeds compete with your plants for water and nutrients, and in June they can get out of hand quickly. Little and often is the best approach.
If you have climbing plants or tall perennials, check their supports. Summer storms can appear quickly and an unsupported plant can snap or topple overnight.
Hedges
Late May to late June is the ideal window for the first trim of the year on most hedge species. Cutting now encourages a second flush of growth that will fill out nicely by autumn.
Avoid trimming hedges if you know birds are nesting — it's worth checking before you start. Once nesting season is over, you can trim more freely.
Watering
New plants and anything in pots will need regular watering. Water in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation and avoid scorching leaves in direct sun.
Group pots together where possible — they retain moisture better that way and it makes watering quicker.
Quick June Wins
Pinch out the tips of sweet peas to encourage bushier growth
Tie in climbing roses and other wall shrubs
Check for aphids on roses and new growth — treat early before infestations build
Feed container plants weekly with a liquid fertiliser
Clear any remaining spring bulb foliage once it has died back fully
June sets the tone for the rest of the summer. A bit of consistent effort now means you'll spend more time enjoying the garden and less time firefighting later in the season.
